The Aldi Lead Poisoning Situation. What You Need To Know

(Last Updated On: August 18, 2017)

With reports of lead contamination affecting around 13,000 homes across Australia, homeowners are being warned to not use water from a certain tap purchased from Aldi.

The “Spiral Spring Mixer Tap” from German discount giant Aldi has hit the news over concerns that the tap has up to 15 times the lead levels allowed in Australian drinking water. Available as a product special in their June catalogue, Aldi representatives are urging customers to return the tap immediately.

Tested by the Queensland Health’s Forensic and Scientific Services, customers are being urged to avoid using the tap for all drinking and cooking purposes until there are further instructions.

Did You Buy This Tap From Aldi’s? Here’s What You Can Do:

If you happen to be affected by this event, there are things you should and shouldn’t do to protect your health, money and property.

Due to the nature of works involved, you risk voiding any home warranties and insurance cover you have by undertaking the works yourself. In fact, undertaking plumbing works on your properties water line is against insurance policy due to the risks involved (be sure to check with your insurance provider). Seek a licenced professional plumber to assist in removing and replacing any affected taps.

Lead poisoning is also known as a cumulative toxin. The continued consumption of high levels of lead will eventually have adverse effects on health. Babies, young children and unborn babies are at the most risk as they absorb more iron than humans. This can have a wide range of significant effects on their developing bodies which include high blood pressure, seizures and joint and muscle pain. Save yourself headaches and future problems by avoiding the consumption and usage of any water that has passed through the tap.

With an official recall policy now in place, those affected by the tap can return the Spring Mixer tap back to the ALDI store they purchased it from for a full refund. If you require your taps to be removed and replaced with a quality approved mixer, contact the team at RTL Plumbing on 07 3399 2203.
